Accounts Reimagined
A concept that evolved into the new accounts interface on the mobile banking app
A concept that evolved into the new accounts interface on the mobile banking app
The Goal
In Absa’s past, the banks digital presence has been lead by Web. In a features life cycle it would be introduced to web before the app. In 2020 This was going to begin to change. Features would begin to be created mobile first.
There for our goal would be to ensure our design infrastructure, had to be robust enough to facilitate the genesis of new features.

An Absa Project

1. "A Case for clusters"
The first key challenge we aimed to tackle, was improving the navigability of, home page, giving the user access to more content using less visual real-estate. To achieve this, we introduce, what we termed “Clusters: A loose grouping of bank products that are related in the way that a customer would interact with them”.
Creating this idea allows both designer’s and user’s to have a base with which to develop a new mental model of the bank’s offering.
2. Diverging in Darkmode
In 2019 Absa began the journey of introducing darkmode to an existing system. Because of a lack of time & resources up untile this point we had simply followed the apple darkmode style guide.
This project was the first deviation from common practice, exploring new meta rules to guide our use of colour for dark mode.
3. App Exploration
In the early stages of the banking app, exploration was pretty low in our list of priorities, simply because there weren’t too my products and offerings to explore. With the steap increase in products on app over the past few years, exploration has slowly risen in the list of priorities.
For this reason we employed 4 key features to enhance exploitability.
Bank wide explore
Category specific explore
What's new stories
Introduction of illustration.
4. Account Interface Flexibility
Last but certainly not least we were faced with the challenge of forming a conceptual model for accounts, that could accommodate Transactional accounts, Savings & investment accounts as well as the bank's insurance offerings.
In order to achieve this kind of flexibility while maintaining order, we had to create a versatile dynamic card component which we termed "Tiles".
